“Aferim!” enters competition for the Golden Bear


Romanian movie Aferim!, directed by Radu Jude, is one of the 23 films selected in the official competition of the Berlin International Film Festival 2015, which takes place between February 5-15.

Some of the main contenders for the Golden Bear are Queen of Desert, directed by Werner Herzog, Taxi by Jafar Panahi, Eisenstein in Guanajuato, by Peter Greenaway, and Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups.Aferim! is a historical movie placed in XIX century Wallachia (Tara Romaneasca). It tells the story of a tax collector and administrator (zapciu) working for a local lord and his son in their quest to find a runaway slave.

Cast: Teodor Corban,  Mihai Comănoiu, Cuzin Toma, Alexandru Dabija, Luminița Gheorghiu, Victor Rebengiuc, Alberto Dinache, Alexandru Bindea, Mihaela Sîrbu, Adina Cristescu, Șerban Pavlu,  Gabriel Spahiu, Dan Nicolaescu.

The script is co-written by Radu Jude and Florin Lăzărescu, Marius Panduru is the DoP, Cătălin Cristuțiu the editor and Dana Lucreția Bunescu – the sound designer. The costumes were created by Dana Păpăruz and the production design by Augustina Stanciu. Expert Constanța Vintilă-Ghițulescu was a historical adviser. Ada Solomon is the producer of the film.

Another Romanian movie, Tudor Giurgiu's Why me/De ce eu, inspired by the real case of a young prosecutor who comitted suicide, will compete in the Panorama Special section of the Berlin Film Festival.

In 2013, Child’s Pose/Pozitia Copilului, by Calin Peter Netzer, won the Golden Bear.


Aferim! is produced by Hi Film and co-produced by Klas Film Bulgaria, Endorfilm Cehia, Mulberry Development România, with the participation of Nu Boyana Film Studios, U-Films, Production XMG Media, Abis Studio, Division Camera, in association wih EZ Films and with the participation of HBO România.
